I have been working within the Sealing Technology field for the last 7 years. I initially focused on pressurised PTFE piston rod seals for a Stirling engine manufacturer (Sweden). Later, during my PhD, I specialised in FKM rotary lip seals for a stern tube seals supplier (The Netherlands).
During these years, I realised the complexity of manufacturing reliable seals and gaskets. A large amount of testing is required before a new design reaches the market. This results in little development of the sealing components and we often end up using non-optimal seal designs for our applications.
In other words, there is room for improvement. Additive Manufacturing (AM) eases the development of customised sealing components. In the past, AM lacked the dimensional accuracy and the surface quality necessary for seals. However, nowadays AM technologies show improved precision and new materials with enhanced tribological properties are emerging.
I am looking for an industrial partner to explore the possibility of using AM for their sealing components.
I plan to carry out a feasibility study to determine the most suitable AM technology and materials to manufacture seals.
Do contact me if you would like me to focus on your seals.
